I’m a Wix partner and have developed many sites using Wix, but the hardest sell to customers is the cost of Wix. There’s a trick to saving money on your Wix subscription… read on!
On the surface, looking at the Wix Pricing page, it is NOT the most economical platform out there, especially when you can find FREE website hosting at various places, you just have to put up with some advertising by the hosting provider on your site.
However, Wix is no different… they offer free-forever hosting if you don’t mind having a non-branded domain name and having a small Wix advertisement at the top of your page.
Example: The Diamond Valley Writers' Guild decided to sunset an online magazine and go a different direction, but they wanted the content of that magazine preserved. I transitioned it from their paid SquareSpace hosting to a free-forever Wix account and then just redirected their domain to the free Wix URL. Voilà, free web hosting and their traditional domain name still works!
As with most FREE hosting, you will have traffic and other limitations imposed on your site.
Why Wix?
As someone that’s been building websites since the early days of the world wide web (years before Yahoo (1994) and Google (1996) even existed!), I’ve seen pretty much everything.
I even remember hating Wix back when they first launched since the builder was so limited and buggy compared to WordPress. That was probably around 2010 or so?
Here we are in 2026, after years of building websites, I’m pretty adept with WordPress and Shopify and do still design some sites with those, but I usually guide customers toward Wix.
WordPress is the most popular website builder on the Internet… for good reason. The base software itself is FREE and there is literally thousands of add-ons to do anything you can dream of.
Therein lies the catch!
Most of the best add-ons require payment or a subscription, so it doesn’t take long and you’ll be equal to or greater than the cost of Wix, plus then you need to try and make the plugins work together with your site as they won't all be made by the same developers, which can cause some compatibility issues.
With Wix, the following premium add-ons are FREE and actually made by Wix, so they integrate flawlessly and there's no compatibility issues.
Wix Blog - The heart of any good website, although surprisingly few people understand or use them properly.
Wix Members Area - Build an online community and customer database
Wix Stores - Full eCommerce system

Plus for those of you selling online, at events or even in a brick-and-mortar locations, Wix has various Point-Of-Sale systems to meet your requirements and budget, or you can do it through the website or the Wix mobile app!
How do I save money on Wix?
While the features are amazing, there's still the sticker-shock of the Wix pricing page. Don't fret, there's a way to save $$$ on your Wix subscription.
Think of your website as a virtual property and your subscription as the mortgage!
You need to budget for it and lock it in for as long as you can when the opportunity comes along.
I'm writing this at the tail end of 2025, so the prices below are the actual prices the day I'm writing this. I'm using the CORE package for this example since it is the lowest tier with eCommerce.
Monthly price is CAD$40.00/month
Pay for 1 year @ CAD$396 (CAD$33.00/month)
Pay for 2 years @ CAD$672 (CAD$28.00/month)
Pay for 3 years @ CAD$900 (CAD$25.00/month)
Those are considerable expenses, and there are lots of hosting services out there that are cheaper!
So, do you want to know how to save money with Wix?
Wix offers 50% off discounts every few months, so the trick is to sign up monthly and then when one of those 50% off discounts comes in, lock in for the maximum length of time you can afford!
At the 50% off discount, here's how the amortization works.
Pay for 1 year @ CAD$198 (CAD$16.50/month)
Pay for 2 years @ CAD$336 (CAD$14.00/month)
Pay for 3 years @ CAD$450 (CAD$12.50/month)
Those rates are much more affordable!!! At $12.50/month, it would be tough to find ANY host that offers as much at that price!
Everyone says the renewal is what costs so much!
That is true... if you don't pay attention to the small print!
When you subscribe on the 50% discount there's a notice at the bottom that states...
The 50% off is valid for the first billing cycle only, and is based on standard
pricing starting from the second billing cycle. Additional promotions may apply.
More or less it means that you will pay FULL price when the renewal comes up!
So, the trick is to modify your renewal!
Once you've paid for the discounted subscription, change your billing cycle to MONTHLY. That will then take effect when your current subscription comes up for renewal in a year, or two or three.
By changing your billing cycle to monthly, any subsequent changes to your subscription are considered an upgrade, which is what qualifies you for the 50% discount!
Then as your renewal date draws near, watch for the 50% upgrade discount and repeat the procedure and lock it in for a long as you can afford. I've successfully done this for myself and multiple customers and saved a lot of $$$ doing it! Rinse and repeat!
Hopefully this isn't just a convenient loophole that Wix doesn't block, but for now... make hay while the sun shines!
